Summer has a rhythm all of its own. The long days encourage travel, adventures, late nights, and looser routines. It can feel wonderful, expansive, free, and full of possibility. However when the season winds down, many of us notice that our regular habits, including yoga and self-care, have slipped quietly into the background.
If you’re returning to your mat after a break, you’re not alone. September is a natural time of transition. The energy shifts: children go back to school, work schedules become steadier, and we start craving a little more structure. This makes it the perfect moment to reset your practice.
Why September Is a Better “New Year”
We often associate January with resolutions, but in many ways September is a more supportive time to set intentions. The body and mind are still lifted by the warmth and light of summer, and we have more energy to begin again. Unlike midwinter, when we may feel heavy or tired, September offers us clarity and momentum.
Instead of waiting until the calendar changes, you can use this season to ask:
- What do I want to bring more of into my life right now?
- Which practices support me most when I feel busy or unsettled?
- How can I create space for myself as I move into autumn?
Easing Back Onto the Mat
If it’s been a while since you practised, remember that yoga doesn’t ask for perfection; it asks only for presence. Showing up, even for a short practice, is enough. Here are a few ideas to make the return feel gentle and enjoyable:
- Choose connection over performance. Your body may feel different after a summer of activity or rest. Let each pose be an exploration rather than a test.
- Think “little and often.” A 10-minute morning stretch or an evening breath practice is more sustainable than aiming for long sessions straight away. I have a range of shorter classes and gentle classes in my online library.
- Use rituals. Rolling out your mat or simply pausing for three deep breaths can signal to your mind that it’s time to reconnect.
- Celebrate progress. Each time you return to your practice, acknowledge it as a step forward. Small acts of consistency create lasting change.
A Practice of Renewal
Yoga is not just about movement, it’s about awareness. September offers us the reminder that we can always begin again. Each new day, each new breath, each pose, each practice is an opportunity to reset.
