Our posture tells the story of how we move through life. It’s not just about standing tall or sitting straight, it’s about the relationship between body, breath and mind. The way we carry ourselves influences how we think, feel, and interact with the world.
How posture affects how we feel
Poor posture doesn’t just cause stiffness or tension; it can subtly drain energy and lower mood. When we slump, our lungs compress and breathing becomes shallow. This reduces oxygen flow and affects how the nervous system functions. Over time, it can leave us feeling tired, anxious, or low in motivation.
Conversely, when we lengthen the spine and open through the chest, we create space for fuller breathing and improved circulation. This simple shift can lift energy, boost focus, and help us feel more confident and calm.
The mind-body connection
In yoga, posture is about awareness rather than perfection. Each pose invites us to notice how we’re standing, sitting, or moving and how that reflects what’s happening inside.
When you soften the jaw, draw the shoulders back, or ground through your feet, you’re not only improving physical alignment but also signalling to the nervous system that it’s safe to relax. Over time, this awareness transforms the way you carry yourself through daily life.
Simple yoga and posture practices
- Mountain Pose (Tadasana): Stand with feet hip-width apart, soften the knees, lengthen through the spine, and lift gently through the crown of the head. Breathe steadily and feel your weight evenly balanced.
- Cat-Cow (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana): Flow between rounding and arching the spine to release tension and restore mobility.
- Chest Opener: Interlace your hands behind your back and gently lift the chest to counteract the effects of sitting.
- Seated Twist: Sit tall and rotate from the waist to refresh the spine and stimulate digestion.
- Conscious Breathing: Sit or stand tall and notice how posture influences your breath. Deep, steady breathing naturally encourages better alignment.
Building small habits that last
True change comes through consistency. Simple, regular moments of awareness – standing taller, taking a deep breath, rolling the shoulders back, have a profound cumulative effect. You don’t need an hour-long class; even five mindful minutes a day can reshape how your body feels and functions.
That’s the inspiration behind my 5-Day, 5-Minute Posture Challenge – short daily practices to strengthen the body, expand the breath, and bring you back to balance. It’s a reminder that good posture isn’t just about how we look, but how we live.
Posture is a reflection of presence. When we align the body, we align the mind. Each time you pause, breathe, and lengthen you invite a sense of lightness and confidence that radiates through every part of your life.
