As we find ourselves on the cusp of this new season, spring is a time of renewal, growth, and fresh energy. While nature begins to bloom, we too, may feel the call to shake off the heaviness of winter and step into a lighter, more vibrant state.
In Ayurveda, spring is governed by Kapha dosha, which brings a cool, moist, and heavy quality. While Kapha is essential for stability and nourishment, an excess can lead to sluggishness, congestion, fatigue, and mental fog. This is why spring is an ideal time to release stagnation and invite movement, warmth, and clarity.
How Yoga Can Help with the Seasonal Shift
A yoga practice tailored for the Kapha season can help energize the body, stimulate circulation, and clear out excess heaviness. Here are a few key elements to focus on:
- Dynamic Movement – Flowy, invigorating sequences like Sun Salutations help warm the body and increase circulation.
- Heart-Opening Poses – Backbends such as Cobra, Camel, and Bridge can counteract Kapha’s tendency toward heaviness and lethargy.
- Twists – Twisting postures like Revolved Chair or Seated Spinal Twist help stimulate digestion and clear stagnation.
- Breathwork (Pranayama) – Energising techniques like Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath) and Bhastrika (Bellows Breath) help invigorate the mind and body.
- Meditation for Clarity – Spring is a great time to set new intentions and practice mindful awareness to clear mental fog.
